July Fishing Trip

This is the biggest one we caught that day. It took 2 of us to hold it. Not because he weighed that much but because he was still alive and kicking. And I mean kicking.

The tall thin guy is Matthew Rowe. Matthew is a senior at William & Mary. When he isn't in school he mates for his Dad, Dave Rowe.

I've known Dave for a long time. Both of us use to oyster years ago. They were the good old days. Being young was the best part of it but we really had some good times talking on the radio while running a cross the river. We really started some stuff with those antics. When you got on the oyster bar all the boats were really close to together so while you were tonging you were constantly talking to someone on another boat.

They were the were the good old days alright, being able to shoot the breeze all day and make a living doing it.

Several times a year a group of us charter a trip with Dave. It is a good way that a group of us can get together, let Dave do the work, and we can be entertained. Believe me it is entertainment. If you want to learn want equipment to use and how to use it this is a pretty inexpensive way to learn. After splitting the cost it really comes out to very little. Here's Dave's website, www.bayquestfishing.com .

If you book a trip make sure you carry a handheld GPS. Right Dave? Actually you better not. Dave might throw you overboard if you bring one.

This is one Melvin caught

If I were Sonny I wouldn't want anyone to know I got this little fish.

These 2 pictures are of skates. You might have read about them. The papers call them cow-hose rays. There are a lot of articles being written about the damage they are doing to the oyster bars. Although we didn't count them I'm sure we caught 20 or more. We had 5 on at one time. They probably weighed 30 to 40 lbs each and put up a great fight.

I don't know of any purpose they have. Every now and then you hear someone say that the wings taste like scallops but I have never meet anyone who has actually eaten one. Besides if they tasted like scallops you would never see one.
