Dear {FirstName},

I have usually gotten my monthly newsletter out long before now but politics have really slowed me up this year.

As most of you know I was a working waterman before I started selling real estate. Today I work on the water in a part time fashion. It is one of those things that you have in your blood and just can't stop. Someone asked me in front of my youngest son, Gordon, wasn't I glad I sold real estate instead of working on the water. Gordon answered, "He wakes up every morning and says that he wished he were going in the river." He finished his answer with a "go figure".
As most of you also know I am vice president of the Virginia Waterman's Association.
Some of you might have been reading about all the new crab regulations that are going to be imposed on crabbers this year. This is where the politics come in. The papers keep reporting about the industry being overfished. But that is not the problem. The problem is the quality of the water in the Bay today. More regulations are not going to bring the crabs back to where they had been until the Bay becomes healthy.
We, the Virginia Waterman, know that regulations are needed in any industry but right now we are in opposition of any more regulations and demanding that the issue of the Bay be addressed. The Virginia Waterman's Association is discussing the possibility of a class action law suit that addresses the continuing decline of the Chesapeake Bay. If you have read about it then I am the Ken Smith they are referring to.
Our Congressman, Rob Wittman, our State Senator, Richard Stuart, and our delegate here in the 99th district, Albert Pollard have come out and publically supported our effort. Virginia's Constitution gives us the right to clean and unpolluted water. If you are a Virginian that is your right. The only 2 things our state forefathers gave Constitutional Protection to were Education and Natural Resources.
If you go to the Virginia Waterman's website, www.virginiawaterman.org you will see where you can download a letter.
In this letter you will see where we are in opposition to more regulations and asking VMRC to be more aggressive in cleaning the Bay. If you are a Virginian then I hope you will download this letter and mail it to VMRC before our April hearing. If you are not a Virginian but thinking about becoming one then you will be glad to know that you have a realtor who is fighting to preserve the the Bay.
Sending in the letter will not make any difference in what regulations are going to be placed on us. What it will do is send a message so your support is appreciated.
I'm off my soapbox. The weather has started to warm up and spring has finally sprung so I hope you plan a trip down here to see us. In the meantime continue to search the Northern Neck MLS. There are some great deals out there.
Ken
